Upper Dolpo Trekking (27 days)

Introduction:

Dolpo is one of the remote region in Nepal. There is no motor able road in this region. Transportation is done through donkeys and caravans of yak. Life in this region is very hard. Despite being remote, this region is very beautiful and has lots more to offer to its visitor.

Beautiful mountains, Shey Phoksundo lake and wildlife, flora, and faunas are found in this Shey Phoksundo National Park. It is the largest national park in Nepal.

Beautiful mountains, Shey Phoksundo lake and wildlife, flora, and faunas are found in this Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Most of the people are Buddhist and mostly influenced with Tibetan culture and lifestyle. People of this region do trade mostly with Tibet.

 

Day via day Itinerary:

Day 01:  Arrival in Kathmandu:

Upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be hearty welcomed by our staffs.  After completion of airport duties (visas, documents, etc.), you will proceed towards the arrival gate and look for our representatives.  After that, you will be escorted to Shankar Hotel.

After checking in, you can take rest for few hours and go out for sightseeing with our guide or representatives.  We will organize a typical Nepali welcome dinner at the evening along with Nepali traditional dance and music.

Day 02:  Kathmandu – Trek preparation. 

After finishing breakfast, we start our day with sightseeing some local historical and cultural attractions near Kathmandu including durbar square and temples like Pashupatinath, Baudha, and Swyambhu (monkey temple).  At afternoon, we will meet our tour guide, team leader, and other members of our trip and discuss about the trek where you can ask any questions regarding this trek.

Day 03:  Fly to Nepalgunj:

Today, we fly to Nepalgunj, southwest part of Nepal, near the border of India.  After reaching there, we can go out in the local market where you can finds goods at cheap rate.  We can see people from India and other places of Nepal doing trade there.  Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 04:  Fly to Juphal (2500) and trek to Dunai (2100 m):

With an early morning flight, we reach Juphal.  Flights are always scheduled early in mornings because after 10 there is a high wind at Thulo Bheri valley, making flights impossible.  We will start our trek from Juphal to reach Dunai.  It is a short downhill walk through green lands and few houses and hotels.  After few hours, of walk, we reach Dunai.  Overnight stay at Dunai.

Day 05:  Dunai to Chepka (2670 m):

Today we start our trek to reach Chepak.  It will take about 7 hours to reach Chepak.  We will first cross the suspension bridge and continue to follow the trail along the bank of Thulo Bheri river.  On the way, we will see houses and teashops.  Also, we will see pastures and green hills while trekking.  We will pass through Parela, Rahagoan, and Ankhe villages.  After few hours of walk, we reach Chepka.  There are few houses and shops in this village.  overnight stay at Chepka.

Day 06:  Chepka to Renje (3010 m):

Today’s trail goes through river banks, forest and climbing uphill and downhill.  We will walk through plain, rocky, and green lands.  After few hours of walk, we now reach Renje, a small village with few houses.  Overnight stay at Renje.

Day 07:  Renje to Ringmo (2650 m):

Today we will walk through Suli Gaad Valley.  Trail is steep and narrow as well as both uphill and downhill.  We will reach Palam after few hours of walk.  Here you have to entry our name to enter to Shey Phoksundo National Park.  After finishing checking, we continue to trek further to reach Ringmo village.  On the way, we will see beautiful high waterfall.  We will also see stone houses, chortens, and mani walls while walking.  After few hours of walk, we reach Ringmo village.  Overnight stay at Ringmo village.

Day 08:  Rest day:

Today, we will explore around Ringmo.  We will go sightseeing around lakeside where there are many old historic gompas like While Pal Sentan Thasoon Chholing gompa, Bon-Po gompa, etc.  We will explore this gompas and have some chit-chat with the local people inside the monastery.  Overnight stay at Ringmo.

Day 09:  Ringmo to Chunemba (3 630 m):

Today, we will walk on a rocky trail along the Phoksundo Lake.  We will walk through forest and streams.  We will climb further up to get a view of Sonam Khang.  Further descending we reach to the west part of the lake, where there is Phoksundo khola.  We now head to west, the valley becomes wider.  We follows trails through bush, trees, and streams.  In about 7 hours, we reach Chunemba.  Overnight stay at Chunemba.

Day 10:  Chunemba to Lar Tsa (4120 m):

Today, we will cross east bank of Phoksundo khola.  We follow the trail to reach Kang Gompa.  From here, we will climb up.  The view from here is spectacular.  We get the view of Kang Chunne and Shey Shikar.  From there, we descend through rocky trail to reach Lar Tsa.  Overnight stay at Lar Tsa.

Day 11:  Lar Tsa to Mendok Din (4610 m):

After few minutes of walk, we will cross a bridge over a river and climb uphill to reach green edge.  From there, we gently descend to reach Mendok Ding.  Again, we will climb up along the bank of the stream to reach campsite.  There is a chance to spot a blue sheep herd in the hills.  Overnight stay at Mendok Din.

Day 12:  Mendok Din to Shey Gompa (4390 m):

There are two options today to reach Shey Gompa.  One is route through Sheu La another is Dolma trail.  Both trails offers scenic view of the mountain and its surrounding.  We can choose either one of those routes.  After few hours of walking through jungles and grass lands, we reach Shey Gompa.  There are few huts of the villagers here in Shey Gompa.  Overnight stay at Shey Gompa.

Day 13:  Rest Day:

Today is the rest day here.  We will explore around this place.  We will visit the historic Shey Gompa.  There is a statue of Guru Rinpoche, Milarepa, and Shakyamuni.  We will explore the mani walls, chortens, and wall paintings in this gompa.  Overnight stay at Shey Gompa.

Day 14:  Shey Gompa to Namgung (4430 m):

We will trek to reach Namgung today.  It will take about 8 hours to reach there.  Today’s trail is mostly uphill as well as downhill.  Enjoying the beauty of the nature, we will reach Namgung.  Overnight stay at Namgung.

Day 15:  Namgung to Karang (4050 m):

We pass through Namgung Khola to reach Karang.  It will take about 7 hours to reach Karang.  We can also descend to reach Saldang, but this village has very little to offer for tourists, so we will follow a trail to reach Karang.  Overnight stay at Karang.

Day 16:  Karang to Mugaon (4100 m):

From Karang, we descend to reach Torak Sumdo, the meeting point of Namgung Khola and Polang khola.  Crossing this river, we ascend to Yanger Gompa.  We walk along the river side valley.  After few hours of walk, we reach Mugaon.  Overnight stay at Mugaon.

Day 17:  Mugaon to Shimen (4010 m)

Today we will continue our trek following a trail which leads us to reach Mushi La.  View from this place is beautiful.  After taking a break, we again continue our trek and descend to reach Shimen village.  We can enjoy the green pasture land while trekking.  Overnight stay at Shimen.

Day 18:  Shimen to Tinje (4150 m):

Today, we ascend from Shimen village to reach Tinje.  First we reach Pha and then we reach Tinje after about 7 hours of walk.  We will walk through green lands, forests, and rocky trail.  Overnight stay at Tinje.

Day 19:  Tinje to Rakpa (4530 m):

Today’s trail pass through Tinje Airport.  This trail leads to Tarap.  We continue this trail along the bank of the river to reach Rakpa.  We will walk through the rocky trail through the jungle, riverbanks.  Overnight stay at Rakpa.

Day 20:  Rakpa to Chharka (4120 m):

Today, we will trek up to reach Chharka La.  Trail from there is downhill with the valley on the side, then we will further descend to reach the valley.  Then after few hours of walk, we reach beautiful Chharka village.  This village is located on the bank of Barbung Khola.  Overnight stay at Chharka.

Day 21:  Chharka to Norbulung (4750 m):

Our trek begins today with a climb up to the ridge.  Then we descend to the bank of the river.  Walking both uphill as well as downhill and walking on the rough trail, we will be out of valley after few hours.  Then we come forward to a meadow and reach Norbulung.  Overnight stay at Norbulung.

Day 22:  Norbulung to Sangda Phedi (5460 m):

Today, we trek through yak pasture at Molum Sumna.  We will cross the pasture land to reach Sangda La.  We will reach at the top of this pass to get a beautiful view of the nature.  Further descending from there will take us to Sangda Phedi.  Overnight stay at Sangda Phedi.

Day 23:  Sangda Phedi to Sangda (3700 m):

We descend down today to lower Sangda La.  The trail is full of loose rocks.  This trail will take us to Sangda Ghunsa village.  Passing this village, we then cross Chalung Khola and then climb steep hill.  Climbing both uphill as well as downhill, we now reach Sangda village after about 8 hours of walk.  Overnight stay at Sangda.

Day 24:  Sangda to Dhagarjun (3290 m):

Today, we will climb hill behind Sangda, and we will cross many ridges.  Walking uphill and downhill, we descend down the Kali Gandaki valley.  From there, we follow the trail leading Dhagarjun.  Overnight stay at Dhagarjun.

Day 25:  Dhagarjun to Jomsom (2670 m) and fly to Pokhara.

Today, we climb the crest and then descend down to reach Jomsom.  The trail is full of loose rocks, so we must be careful while walking.  In about 3 hours we reach Jomsom.  From there, we will take a flight to Pokhara.  In about 20 minutes, we will reach Pokhara.  This flight offers a great view of the valley and mountain ranges.  Overnight stay at Pokhara.

Day 26:  Pokhara to Kathmandu (Drive):

After finishing breakfast, we catch a bus to reach Kathmandu which is about 200 km drive.  We can enjoy beautiful scenery on the way back.  It will take about 4 to 5 hours to reach Kathmandu.  Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the hotel and rest.  After rest and lunch you can enjoy your free time shopping handicrafts and other local products for your friends and relatives back to your home.  Or you can even do some sightseeing in your leisure time.  In the evening, we will have dinner together and share our experience about the trekking.

Day 27:  Final day:

Final departure:  Today will be your last day here in Nepal.  You can still do some last moment shopping or local sightseeing if there is any leisure time left.  And approximately 3 hours before scheduled flight, our representative will escort you to the airport.
