Gokyo Chola Pass Trek (22 days)

Introduction:

Everest Base Camp trek offers you to experience the adventure of trekking of the Himalayas.  With the altitude ranging from 1500 m to about 4000 m, our itineraries are designed in such a way that the trekkers will feel easy to trek in this region.  Anyone with good health and physical condition can participate in this trek.  Throughout this entire trek, Everest region welcomes you with its majestic view of different mountain ranges.  

Beautiful views of mountains and green pastures will accompany you throughout the trek.  You will enter through Sagarmatha National Park which is the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Khumbu region.  If lucky, you might even see very rare species of wild animals like snow leopard, red panda, musk deer, etc.  Also there are different flora and faunas you will see while trekking in this region.

Trekking to base camp you will encounter many Sherpa communities (famous for mountaineering) and many Buddhist Monasteries containing some incredible relics.

 

chola-passThis trek will also help you to come close with the Sherpa culture and ritual.  Most of the people here are Buddhist and you will see many monasteries, prayer wheels, colorful flags, chortens on the way while trekking.  You will get a chance to experience the lifestyle of the local community in this region.

Day via day Itinerary:

Day 01:
Arrival day in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264 ft)

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal, you will be welcomed by our staff and you will be transferred to hotel in Kathmandu.  After checking in a hotel, you will rest for the day.  In the leisure time, you can go for short sightseeing or you can relax at the hotel.  In the evening, we will organize a welcome dinner with Nepali cuisine at hotel in Kathmandu.  Overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 02:
Visit in Kathmandu:

Today, we will do some local sightseeing in places like Basantapur Durbar Square, Baudhanath stupa, Swyambhu stupa, Pashupatinath, etc.  In the evening time, you will be introduced to a trek guide who will do a brief discussion about the trip.  You can ask any questions regarding this trip.

Day 03:
Fly to Lukla (2800m), camp in Phakding (2640 m)

In the morning, we will pack our bags and drive to Tribhuvan International Airport to catch our flight to Lukla.  It will take about 35 minutes to reach Lukla from Kathmandu.  During this flight, you will be mesmerized by the scenic beauty of different mountain range.  After about 35 minutes, we will reach Lukla.  After landing, baggage for the porter will be divided.  In the meantime, you can walk around the airport and take some good look around there.

After packing our bags, we will start our trek to reach Phakding.  The trail is uphill and downhill, it is easy to walk.  While walking, you can enjoy the beautiful view.  On the way, you will see prayer wheel.  After about 4 hours of walk, we will reach Phakding.  We can enjoy the leisure time roaming around the village.  Overnight stay at Phakding.

Day 04:
Phakding to Namche Bazar (3440 m)

Today, we will start our trek along the bank of Dudh Koshi River.  We can enjoy the natural view of hills while trekking.  After few hours of trekking, we will cross a suspension bridge over it and after a hike to a small uphill, we will reach a small village, Monjo.

This village is a gateway to Sagarmatha National Park.  After finishing short formalities of the national park, we continue our trek further downhill to reach.

Jorsalle village.  We will take rest for some time here.  After few minutes of rest, we again continue to trek to reach Namche Bazar.  On the way, you will see different mountains like Mt. Everest, Mt. Kusum Khangaru, etc.  After about 5-6 hours of uphill as well as downhill walk, we finally reach our today’s destination, Namche Bazar.  Overnight stay at lodge here at Namche.

Day 05:
Rest day and acclimatization:

Today will be rest day here at Namche Bazar, but we will not stay idle.  Acclimatization is very important while doing these kind of high-altitude trekking.  We can do some short hiking nearby to Khongde and Khumjung village and do some local sightseeing at the museum nearby.  

You can also interact with the local people here in Namche and know about the local culture and lifestyle.  If it is Saturday, there will be local weekly market.  You can enjoy rest of the day here enjoying local market.  Namche is main market for the local people.  In Namche, there are internet cafes, bakery, banks, ATMs, monasteries, and museum.  Overnight stay at lodge.

Day 06:
Namche Bazzar to Thame (3,739 m):

 

Today’s trail is not so difficult.  We will trek in somewhat even trail which lead up to Bhote Koshi valley.  Along the way, we will see many prayer flags, wheels, and prayer stones.  Along with this, we will also see different mountain ranges and wild animals and birds.  After few hours of walking, we reach Bhote Koshi.  Trail from Bhote Koshi is slightly uphill.  This trail continues up to Thame.  Enjoying the beautiful view of the nature, we reach Thame after few hours of walking.  This is a small village where there are few people and houses.  There is a monastery in above the Thame village.  Overnight stay in Thame.

Day 07:
Thame to Khumjung (3,786 m):

Today, we will take back same route to Bhote Koshi and towards the Namche.  From there we will take a trail that leads us to Khumjung.  It is a beautiful village with beautiful view of mountains and houses influenced with Tibetan culture.  At the top of this village, there is monastery.  From this village, you will get a beautiful view of Kantega, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku.  Overnight stay at Khumjung.

Day 08:
Khumjung to Dole (4,200 m):

Today’s trail is both uphill and downhill.  We will continue to walk on a trail to reach Phortse Thenga village.  Trail is uphill from here.  After taking a break for a lunch in between, we further continue to trek to reach Dole.  After few hours of walk, we reach Dole where we will stay overnight.

Day 09:
Dole to Machhermo (4,470 m):

After breakfast, we start our trek.  Scenic beauty of the mountains will take your breath away.  The trail ascends from side of the valley.  Walking on the rocky trail, after few hours of walking, we reach to Machhermo.  After reaching there, we can either rest for the whole day or we can visit Himalayan Rescue Association or we can go for sightseeing nearby.  Overnight stay at Machhermo.

Day 10:
Machhermo to Gokyo (4,800 m):

Today’s trail will take you to the beautiful view of Gokyo.  While trekking, you will see Khangtega and Cho-Oyu.  Enjoying the view, we continue to walk uphill to reach side of the Ngozumpa Glacier.  Following the rocky trail, we reach first lake Longpongo.  After taking short break to enjoy the view of this lake, we again continue to trek to reach second lake; Taboche Tsho.  Further continuing to trek from the second lake, we now reach third lake, Dudh Pokhari.  Gokyo village is situated between this third lake and Cho-Oyu mountain in the back.  We will take a short tour around this lake.  Overnight stay at Gokyo.

Day 11:
Gokyo Rest day and acclimatization:

Today is the rest day here at Gokyo for acclimatization.  We trek today to fourth lake Thonak Tsho and fifth lake Ngozuma Tsho.  These two lakes are near to the Gokyo village, so in short time, we can go there.  From there, we can get a good view of Cho-Oyu, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, etc.  After finishing sightseeing these lakes, we return back to Gokyo and rest.  Overnight stay at Gokyo.

Day 12:
Gokyo to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) to Thaknak (4,750 m):

We will hike up to Gokyo Ri early in the morning.  Trail is straight uphill to reach there.  It takes about 3-4 hours to reach up there.  Climbing this Ri is a worth as you will get a beautiful view of Thamserku, Kusum Khangru, Cholatse, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cholatse, and many more.  Morning view up from here is simply amazing.  After spending some time up there, we now return back to Gokyo.  After taking few hours of break, we further continue our trek to reach Thaknak where we will spend our night.

Day 13:
Thaknak to Chola Pass (5,367 m) to Dzongla (4,830 m):

Today, we will start our trek early in the morning.  Steep path will make it somewhat difficult to trek today, so we must be careful while walking on this trail to avoid slips and falls on the rocky and icy trails.  After few hours of walking, we will reach at the top of the Chola Pass where we will see colorful prayer flag.  From there, we will see Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Baruntse, etc.  Enjoying the view, we continue our trek to reach Dzongla.  From here, we will see full view of Chotlatse and Ama Dablam.  Far below, we can also see Pheriche village.  Overnight stay at Dzongla.

Day 14:
Dzongla to Gorakshep (5,170 m):

After breakfast, we continue our trek to reach Gorakshep.  We will pass through Lobuche village, which is about 3 hours of trek.  Taking a short break here we walk the trail through moraine of Khumbu glacier.  We will see different mountains like Pumori, Mahalangur, Nuptse, etc. while trekking.  After few more hours of walking, we now reach Gorakshep.  From here, we will see snow-capped mountain surrounding us.  Overnight stay at Gorakshep.  If there is a leisure time, we will do some sightseeing here.

Day 15:
Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) back to Gorakshep:

Today, we will trek up to the Everest Base Camp.  Taking trail, we will come through Indian Army Mountaineers’ Memorial.  After passing through this memorial, we will reach at the base camp.  At the base camp, we will see bright color tents of the trekkers.  From this base camp, we will see Pumori, Nuptse, and Khumbuste.  After enjoying the view at the base camp, we now return back to Gorakshep.  Overnight stay at Gorekshep.

Day 16:
Gorakshep to Pheriche (4,280 m):

Today, we will trek back to reach Pheriche.  Today’s trail is slightly rocky as well as slippery, so we need to be careful while walking to avoid any kind of injury.  Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Changtse are mountains that we will see while trekking.  After few hours of our trek, we now reach to Pheriche.  Overnight stay at Pheriche.

Day 17:
Pheriche to Tengboche:

We might feel somewhat easy to walk today because we are trekking down to lower altitude.  We will also feel easy to breath today.  Trail pass through Sherpa village, Khumbu Khola valley and Shomare.  While trekking, we will see different prayer flags, prayer wheels, and monasteries in different places.  We will pass through forest and bank of Imja Khola.  After few hours of walking, we now reach Tengboche.  Overnight stay at Tengboche.

Day 18:
Tengboche to Namche Bazar:

Trail is mostly downhill.  Today’s trail follows through forest of rhododendron.  While trekking, we will get good view of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, etc.  Walking downhill and crossing suspension bridge over Dudh Koshi we reach Namche after about 5-6 hours of walk.  One the way, we will see water powered prayer wheels, colorful prayer flags, and chortens.

Day 19:
Namche Bazar to Lukla:

Today, will be the last day of trek.  Walking is easy as we drop down the altitude and the weather is quite warm and sunny.  We will walk through pine forest and cross suspension bridge over a river to reach Monju.  After completing some formalities in the entrance of the national park, we continue our trek to reach Phakding.  Taking break for some time in Phakding, we continue to walk to reach Lukla.  Overnight stay here at Lukla.

Day 20:
Flight: Lukla to Kathmandu::

With all the memories of the entire trip, we will take early morning flight to reach Kathmandu.  Upon arrival here, our representative will take you to the hotels and rest for some time.  You can rest for the rest of the day or do some local sightseeing around the city, or you can do sightseeing the next day.  Overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 21:
Visit in Kathmandu:

Today, you can go sightseeing for the whole day.  You can go for sightseeing in some historic places like Kathmandu Durbar Square, inner cities in the town, religious places like Swyambhunath, Pashupatinath, Baudhanath, etc.  You can do some shopping for your friends and families back home.  Return back to hotel in the evening.  We can share our experience about the Everest trekking with our friends.

Day 22:
Depart:

Today is the final day here in Nepal.  You can still do some last minute shopping if you have spare time.  Then you will be taken to the airport 3 hours before your flight.  Hope to see you soon again.
